48. Overcoming Seasonal and Food Allergies with Dr. Basil Kahwash

Season #2 Episode #48

Welcome back everyone. We are doing something a little bit different today. I have with me here in person- Dr. Basil Kahwash, who is a Vanderbilt physician in the area of allergies and immunology.

I've gotten to know Dr. Basil through clubhouse and he's a really thoughtful person. I really appreciate his perspective and I'm grateful to have him on the show.

As your host, I feel a responsibility to show you all different types of approaches to healing and this includes traditional medicine. If you've been listening from the beginning you know that I left traditional medicine both in practice and as a patient, because it didn't solve my problem. But oh my goodness who am I to say that it won't work for you?

It didn't work for me, because it approached my issue as a one-size fits all and I'm not going to do that to you and only show you functional medicine perspectives, because healing is not a one-size fits all. I would be doing you a disservice if I did that. And traditional medicine has a lot of good qualities- I even recommend it to my clients in certain cases, when I think medication is their best option.

I also want to encourage you to befriend people who think differently than you. That's how we grow. That's how release ourselves of a fixed mindset and transition to a growth mindset.

Now, this is clearly a topic y'all care about, because I asked you all if you have any questions for Dr. Basil, and y'all sent me so many questions that I had to break them down into themes and we are going to start basic.

In the episode, we cover:

  1. How the immune system works
  2. What's the relationship between seasonal and food allergies?
  3. How allergy testing works
  4. Is there a way to treat food allergies holistically?
  5. What is histamine intolerance?
  6. Why are foods like dairy, peanuts, and gluten the most common allergies?
  7. How do doctors who treat food allergies equip themselves with knowledge on nutrition?
